5 MCP Servers You Need Right Now - Beginner's Setup Guide

These 5 MCP servers let Claude search the web, control a browser, read any website, create images and videos, and test your pages. You set each one up once, and then you just ask Claude in plain words.

7 min readSetup time: about 15 minutes for all 5

The 5 servers at a glance

  • 1. PerplexityReal-time web search. Needs a paid API key.
  • 2. PlaywrightFull browser control. Free, no key.
  • 3. FirecrawlClean content from any website link. Free sign-in option, or an API key for more usage.
  • 4. HiggsfieldImage and video generation. No key, but you need a Higgsfield subscription (it uses your credits).
  • 5. Chrome DevToolsSee, debug and test pages in Chrome. Free, no key.

What you need before you start

  • Claude Desktop or Claude CodeClaude Desktop: free download from claude.ai/download. Claude Code: Claude in your terminal.
  • Node.jsFree from nodejs.org, choose the LTS version. Most servers run with a command called npx, which comes with Node.js.
  • Google ChromeFor servers 2 and 5.

Two ways to add a server

  • Claude Code (easiest)Open your terminal and paste the one-line claude mcp add ... command shown in each section. Done.
  • Claude DesktopGo to Settings → Developer → Edit Config. This opens a file called claude_desktop_config.json. Paste the server's code block inside "mcpServers": { }, save, then fully quit and reopen Claude. Remote servers (like Firecrawl's sign-in option and Higgsfield) are added instead under Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.

1. Perplexity MCP: real-time web search

Claude can search the internet live and bring back fresh answers with sources, so you don't have to switch tabs or copy and paste.

Get your API key

  • Sign up at console.perplexity.ai, add a payment method, and generate a new API key. Copy it somewhere safe.

Add it to Claude

Claude Code (paste your key in place of YOUR_API_KEY):

claude mcp add perplexity --env PERPLEXITY_API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY -- npx -y @perplexity-ai/mcp-server

Claude Desktop (paste into the config file):

Claude Desktop

Restart Claude and try it

Example request

2. Playwright MCP: full browser control

Claude opens a real browser and uses it like a person would: it opens pages, clicks buttons, fills in forms and takes screenshots. It's free and doesn't need an API key.

Add it to Claude

Claude Code:

claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest

Claude Desktop:

Claude Desktop

Restart Claude and try it

The first time, a browser window opens that Claude controls. You can watch it work.

Example request

3. Firecrawl MCP: turn any website into clean content

Give Claude any link and Firecrawl pulls the page's content straight into your chat. It comes back clean and ready to use, without messy HTML. It can also search the web and crawl a whole site.

  • Claude Desktop or claude.aiSettings → Connectors → Add custom connector → name it Firecrawl → paste https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp-oauth → leave Client ID and Secret empty → Connect and sign in.
  • Claude CodePaste the command below, then type /mcp inside Claude Code and follow the sign-in prompt.
claude mcp add --transport http firecrawl https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp-oauth

Get your API key

  • Sign up at firecrawl.dev and copy your API key from the dashboard. It starts with fc-.

Add it to Claude

Claude Code:

claude mcp add firecrawl --env FIRECRAWL_API_KEY=fc-YOUR_API_KEY -- npx -y firecrawl-mcp

Claude Desktop:

Claude Desktop

Restart Claude and try it

4. Higgsfield MCP: create images and videos by describing them

Claude connects to Higgsfield's image and video models (like Kling and Veo). You just describe what you want in the chat. There's no API key: you sign in with your Higgsfield account.

Make a Higgsfield account

Add it to Claude

  • Claude Desktop or claude.ai (recommended)Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector → name it Higgsfield → paste https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp → Connect → sign in to Higgsfield and approve.
  • Claude CodePaste the command below, then type /mcp inside Claude Code and finish the sign-in in your browser.
claude mcp add --transport http higgsfield https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp

Try it

Example request

5. Chrome DevTools MCP: see, debug and test your pages

Claude gets the same tools web developers use inside Chrome. It can open your website, read its errors, check what loads slowly, and test how the page behaves. It's free and made by the Chrome team.

Add it to Claude

Claude Code (--scope user makes it work in all your projects):

claude mcp add chrome-devtools --scope user -- npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest

Claude Desktop:

Claude Desktop

Restart Claude and try it

Example request

More things to ask: "Check if my site looks right on a phone screen" or "Find any broken links or console errors on my homepage."

If something doesn't work

  • Server not showing up?

Fully quit Claude Desktop (not just close the window) and reopen it. In Claude Code, type /mcp to see which servers are connected.

  • "npx not found"?

Node.js isn't installed. Install the LTS version from nodejs.org, then restart your computer.

  • Config file error?

Check for a missing comma or bracket. Each server sits inside "mcpServers": { }, separated by commas.

  • API key error?

Make sure you pasted the full key with no extra spaces, and that your account has credit.

  • Sign-in servers (Higgsfield, Firecrawl hosted) stopped working?

Disconnect and reconnect them under Settings → Connectors.
