You hear these three terms every day. Here's what each one actually does, and which one your business needs.

The answer in one line
Traditional: predicts
Data goes inA decision comes out
"What is this?"
Example: Gmail moves a message to spam.
Generative: creates
A request goes inNew content comes out
"Make me something"
Example: ChatGPT writes a post for you.
Agentic: acts
A goal goes inThe task is done
"Handle this all the way"
Example: a WhatsApp bot that books appointments on its own.
What's special about agentic? The loop
Agentic AI doesn't just answer. It works in a loop until the job is done.
- Plans
- ActsEmail, calendar, CRM
- Checks the result
- Decides what's next
Way out of the loop The task is done
The difference is what you give it: a goal instead of a request.
- Generative"Write a reply to the customer"
- Agentic"Handle customer messages and book appointments in the calendar"
Quick comparison
| Traditional | Generative | Agentic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You give it | Data | A request (prompt) | A goal |
| You get | A label or a score | Text, images, code, video | A finished task |
| Who decides what's next | No one, a fixed step | You | The agent itself |
| The main risk | Outdated data | Confident-sounding inventions | A wrong action in the real world |

One task, three ways
"Where's my order? It was supposed to arrive yesterday."
Traditional: sorts
Tags it "shipping complaint, urgent". A person does the rest.
Generative: writes
Drafts a nice apology. But doesn't know where the order really is.
- Most advanced
Agentic: solves
Finds the order, checks the shipment, replies with a new date and updates the CRM. A person steps in only if something is unusual.
They're not competing, they're layers
- 1950-2010Traditional everywhere
- 2022Generative with ChatGPT
- 2024-2025Agentic becomes practical
One sales agent uses all three:
- Agentic sends it, waits for a reply and books a call
- Generative writes a follow-up
- Traditional scores the lead
Which one does your business need?
- You want to decide fast on lots of data (lead scoring, fraud)Traditional
- You want to create content fast (posts, ads, images)Generative
- You want work to happen on its own (customer replies, appointments, follow-ups)Agentic
Prompt: where does AI fit your business?
Paste it into Claude or ChatGPT. It asks 5 questions and gives you a list of opportunities.
Act as an AI consultant for small businesses. Help me find where AI would save me time or bring in more money.
Ask me these questions, one at a time, and wait for my answer before you go on:
1. What does my business do, and who are the customers?
2. How many employees, and which tools do we use (WhatsApp, Gmail, Sheets, CRM)?
3. Which tasks take the most time every week?
4. Where are we losing customers or money today?
5. What's the monthly budget for tools?
Then give me a report:
- Each opportunity sorted into traditional / generative / agentic, with one line explaining why.
- For each one: what it does, which tool, how hard it is to set up (low/medium/high) and how much it saves.
- The first 3 things worth starting with, quick wins first.
- What needs a human check, and what isn't worth automating.
In simple English. If something isn't worth it for a business my size, say so.Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT generative or agentic?
Both. When it answers in the chat, it's generative. When it searches the web or carries out tasks on its own, it's agentic.
Is agentic AI safe for my business?
Yes, if it has clear rules, only the permissions it needs, and a handoff to a person for anything sensitive, like payments and refunds.
Is this only for big companies?
No. A small business can run a WhatsApp agent for the cost of an automation tool plus a few cents per conversation.
