Meta Ads for Beginners: From Account Setup to a Lead Campaign That Works
Facebook and Instagram ads can bring you customers every day, but most beginners burn money on small things: an account set up wrong, the wrong objective, or changes every single day. This guide walks through everything in order, short and simple.

How it all connects
Before you click anything, understand what the system is made of:
- Personal Facebook profileYou. It's how you log in to everything.
- Business PortfolioThe business's "cabinet". It holds all the assets, people and permissions. It used to be called Business Manager.
- Facebook PageThe public face of the business. Ads run in its name.
- Professional Instagram accountThe business's face on Instagram.
- Ad AccountThe "wallet". Your campaigns, budget and billing live here.
- Pixel / DatasetCode that tracks what people do on your website after clicking an ad.
3 words to keep apart:
- OwnershipWhich Business Portfolio the asset belongs to.
- AccessWho is allowed to work on it.
- ConnectionWhich assets work together.
Connecting Instagram to an ad account does not transfer ownership.
Step 1: Prepare (5 minutes that save a week)
- Two-factor authentication is on for your Facebook profileA phone code on top of your password. Without it, Meta blocks many actions.
- A real personal profile with a name and photoNew, empty profiles get blocked much faster.
- A business email you can access
- A business payment method
Step 2: Create a Business Portfolio
Log in with your personal profile
Create a new portfolio
Business name, your name and business email.
Confirm the email
That Meta sends you.
Add one more trusted person
With full control. If you ever get locked out, they can save you.
Step 3: Connect your Page and Instagram
Connect your Page
In business settings: Accounts → Pages → Add.
Connect Instagram
Accounts → Instagram accounts → Add, and log in.
Check the link
Check that Instagram is linked to the right Page.
Step 4: Create an ad account
Create a new account
Accounts → Ad accounts → Add → Create a new ad account.
Give it a clear name
Like "Business Name - Ads".
Time zone
Your local time zone.
Currency
Your local currency.
Step 5: Payment
- In the ad account: Payment settings → Add payment method.
- Fill in real business details, and keep Meta's invoices for your accountant.
- A new account gets a low daily spending limit. It rises on its own as you pay on time.
Step 6: Pixel (only if you have a website)
Connect a data source
Events Manager → Connect data source → Web.
Install the pixel on your site
Wix, Shopify and WordPress have built-in connections that take a few clicks.
Add the Conversions API
Sends data from your server, not only the browser. It improves tracking, because ad blockers and iPhones hide some actions.
Verify your domain
Business settings → Brand safety → Domains.
Mark the key events
Lead (left details), Purchase (bought), Contact (reached out).
Campaign structure: 3 levels
- CampaignWhat's the goal? This is the most important decision, because Meta will look for exactly what you ask for.
- Ad SetWho, where, how much money and when.
- AdWhat people see: image or video, text, a button and where it leads.

| Downside | More low-quality leads | More expensive, needs a pixel | Someone must reply fast |

Lead form tips:
- Ask only for what you need: name, phone, and 1 to 3 qualifying questions (area, budget, timing).
- Higher Intent adds a review screen before submitting. Fewer leads, but better ones.
- A privacy policy link is required, or you can't publish.
- On the thank-you screen, say what happens next: "We'll get back to you within 2 hours."
What changed at Meta in 2026
- Advantage+ is the defaultThere's no longer a choice between a "manual" campaign and Advantage+. You build a regular campaign (Sales, Leads or App), and it becomes Advantage+ when you keep 3 switches on: campaign budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements.
- Advantage+ Shopping is goneIt was replaced by a regular Sales campaign with the 3 switches. A guide telling you to "open an Advantage+ Shopping campaign" describes a button that no longer exists.
- Fewer interest targeting optionsMeta removed many interest categories. Your ad itself is what finds the audience.
- "Click" now means a link clickIn reports, likes, saves and shares no longer count as clicks. If your numbers dropped, it's a counting change, not a real drop.
- AI add-ons are on by defaultMeta can rewrite the text inside your image, turn an image into a video and add in-app product browsing. Before publishing, review Advantage+ Creative and turn off what doesn't fit.
- New placementsThreads is now part of automatic placements, and ads are starting to appear in WhatsApp Status.
Audience: let Meta choose or choose yourself?
Use Advantage+ Audience (Meta chooses) when...
- You're looking for new customers
- You have several different creatives
- Your product fits a broad audience
- Your budget is reasonable (not $5 a day)
Use a manual audience when...
- Retargeting: only people who visited your site or watched a video
- You're a local business with a small service area
- Your niche is very narrow (for example, only dentists)
- The leads coming in aren't relevant and you want to narrow down
Audience types worth knowing:
- Custom AudiencePeople who already know you: visited your site, watched a video, or a customer list you uploaded.
- LookalikePeople similar to your audience. Works best with a list of a few hundred paying customers.
- Broad audienceOnly location, age and language. Sounds scary, but with good creative it often works best.
Budget: how much do you really need?
Example: a lead costs about $12 → 12 × 50 ÷ 7 ≈ $86 a day.
Most small businesses don't reach 50 a week, and that's fine. The campaign still works, it just learns more slowly. The fix: fewer ad sets, not a small budget split into 10 groups.
- First test, small business
- Daily budget
- $15-30
- Structure
- 1 campaign, 1 ad set, 3-5 ads
- Local business wanting steady leads
- Daily budget
- $30-60
- Structure
- 1 campaign, 1-2 ad sets, 4-6 ads
- Online store / nationwide service
- Daily budget
- $60-150
- Structure
- Sales + a small retargeting campaign
- Scaling up
- Daily budget
- +20% every 3-4 days
- Structure
- Or duplicate the winning ad set
These are starting points from the field, not a promise. Cost per lead changes a lot by industry, country, season and creative.
Build a lead campaign, step by step
Open Ads Manager
And make sure the right ad account is selected.
Create a campaign
+ Create → objective: Leads.
Give it a clear name
BusinessName_Leads_Oct26
Budget
Daily, based on the table. Keep the 3 Advantage+ switches on unless you have a reason not to.
Conversion location
Instant Forms, website or messages.
Audience
Location, minimum age and language in the controls.
Ad
Choose your Page + Instagram and upload 3 to 5 truly different creatives.
Text
A strong opening, what they get, who it's for, and a call to action.
Advantage+ Creative
Review the automatic add-ons and turn off what doesn't fit.
Form
Qualifying questions, privacy policy and a thank-you screen.
Test
Send a test lead with Meta's testing tool and check it reaches whoever follows up with customers.
Publish
And don't touch it for 3 to 5 days.
Creative: today's targeting
The more automated Meta gets, the more your ad itself picks the audience. An ad that speaks to young moms will reach young moms.
- 3 to 6 truly different creativesPer ad set: a problem, a result, a testimonial, behind the scenes, an offer. Not the same image in 3 colors.
- Vertical 9:16 videoFor Reels and Stories, 4:5 for Feed.
- The first 3 secondsDecide everything. Open with the problem or the result, not your logo.
- Always add captionsMost people watch without sound.
- Content that looks real(Phone footage, real faces) often beats polished production.
- When to refreshWhen Frequency passes 3 to 4 and click-through rate drops.
How to know it's working
- CTR
- What it is
- % of viewers who clicked the link
- What it tells you
- Under 1%? Check your creative
- CPL
- What it is
- Cost per lead
- What it tells you
- The price of getting an inquiry
- Cost per customer
- What it is
- Spend ÷ customers who bought
- What it tells you
- The real metric
- ROAS
- What it is
- Revenue for every dollar spent
- What it tells you
- The real metric for stores
- Frequency
- What it is
- How many times a person saw the ad
- What it tells you
- Too high = the audience is tired
When to change something:
Less than 3 days since launch
Nothing. Wait
An ad spent 2-3× your target cost with no lead
Turn it off
Low CTR
New creative or a new opening
Good CTR but no leads
The problem is the form, page or offer
Lots of irrelevant leads
Qualifying questions or Higher Intent
Good, stable cost for a week
Raise budget 20% every 3-4 days
7 mistakes that cost the most money
- Clicking Boost on a post instead of working in Ads Manager.
- Choosing Traffic when you want leads or sales.
- Splitting a small budget across many ad sets.
- Changing something every day, so the campaign never gets to learn.
- Uploading only one creative.
- Following up with leads a day later. By then they're cold.
- No two-factor authentication and no backup admin, and then the account gets blocked.
Good to know: the law
- Marketing messagesIn many countries you can't send marketing SMS, WhatsApp or emails without clear consent. Replying to someone who left a lead about their own request is usually fine.
- PrivacyKeep lead and customer lists with limited access, and never share a sheet with an open link.
Checklist before you launch
- Two-factor authentication + a backup admin
- Page and professional Instagram connected
- Ad account: correct currency, time zone and payment method
- Pixel + domain verification (if you have a website)
- The right objective: Leads or Sales
- Special Ad Category checked
- Audience: location, minimum age and language in the controls
- 3-5 different creatives, including vertical video with captions
- Advantage+ Creative AI add-ons reviewed
- Form with qualifying questions + privacy policy
- Test lead reached the right person
- Someone ready to follow up with leads fast
